Girondins Bordeaux faces bankruptcy after FFF rejects reinstatement

The French Football Federation (FFF) has rejected an application for the reinstatement of Girondins Bordeaux, leaving the historic club in the sixth-tier Regional 1 division. The decision follows a ruling by the National Control and Management Authority (DNCG) in July, which relegated the club due to significant financial irregularities and a failure to secure necessary funds for the upcoming seasons.

Despite intervention from French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari, the FFF Executive Committee (Comex) maintained its stance to avoid creating a legal precedent and to ensure equal treatment among clubs. The federation cited a lack of a detailed restructuring plan and insufficient documentation from potential new owners, including the British investment fund Sparta Capital.

The club, which has won six French championships, faces the imminent threat of judicial liquidation. Bordeaux has expressed outrage on social media, claiming the decision was made without proper deliberation or a vote on their submitted documentation. The club argues that its history and importance to French football should have warranted a more thorough review.
