Girondins de Bordeaux forced into sixth‑tier after DNCG financial ban

The DNCG appeal commission has confirmed that Girondins de Bordeaux are excluded from all French national competitions. The club, a six‑time French champion, must restart at Regional 1 – the sixth level of French football – after failing to provide the €10 million financial guarantee required for the 2026‑27 season.

Owner Gérard Lopez and the British investment fund Sparta Capital were unable to secure the required funds, prompting the DNCG to cement the administrative relegation. A commercial court is set to consider a liquidation petition, which could end the historic club founded in 1881.

Former player Christophe Dugarry publicly denounced the club’s management, calling for the removal of all investors and warning that the club may have to start from the bottom of the pyramid. The decision marks a dramatic fall for a club that once featured stars such as Zinedine Zidane and won six league titles.
