Girondins de Bordeaux begins play in French sixth division

After a period of severe financial instability and administrative relegation, Girondins de Bordeaux has officially begun competing in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Régional 1, the sixth tier of French football. The club’s descent follows a series of setbacks, including the loss of professional status and previous relegations due to financial irregularities.

A critical turning point occurred on September 30, when the club was acquired for a symbolic one euro by the British investment fund Park Bench. While the acquisition allowed the club to meet financial deadlines and secure participation in the regional league, the new owners have assumed responsibility for an estimated 15 million euros in debt.

The club is currently attempting to rebuild its identity and staff. Notable developments include the hiring of former defender Paul Baysse as an assistant coach and the return of club symbol Benoît Trémoulinas to the pitch. Despite the current low standing, the club remains a significant cultural institution in French football, having previously won six Ligue 1 titles and reached the Champions League quarter-finals.
