Giszowiec community garden opens in Katowice
A new community garden has opened in the Giszowiec district of Katowice, Poland. The project was a collaborative effort between the Katowice Municipal Greenery Department (Zakład Zieleni Miejskiej) and the retailer Biedronka, owned by Jeronimo Martins Polska.
The location was selected through a public vote where residents cast 115,000 votes across Katowice; Giszowiec won with 44,000 votes. The garden is designed as an open, barrier-free space intended for relaxation, social integration, and urban gardening.
Key features of the site include: - A relaxation zone with benches, hammocks, picnic sets, and chess equipment. - A cultivation area with planting boxes and a water reservoir for growing herbs and vegetables. - A green area featuring fruit trees (apple and plum), ornamental shrubs, and an insect hotel. - Accessible paths made of permeable mineral surfaces suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.
