Katowice urban greening and ecological initiatives

Overview

Katowice is implementing various urban greenery projects through community engagement and municipal funding. In the Giszowiec district, a new community garden has opened following a public vote where residents selected the location. This barrier-free space, developed in collaboration with the Katowice Municipal Greenery Department and retailer Biedronka, includes relaxation zones, cultivation areas for herbs and vegetables, and habitats for insects.

Building on these efforts, the Katowice Municipal Greenery Department has announced two new tenders for 20 pro-ecological projects funded by the city’s Green Budget. Valued at over 706,000 PLN, these initiatives focus on planting trees and shrubs, creating flower meadows, and developing habitats for local wildlife such as birds, hedgehogs, and hares. A third tender is also nearing resolution, with a bid of 330,000 PLN submitted for projects including covering lampposts with climbing plants in the Three Ponds Valley, managing terrain near the Tysiącecie district brine spring, and revitalizing a green area on Solska Street.

Mayor Marcin Krupa has emphasized that the Green Budget serves as a vital tool for urban greening and ecological education, allowing residents to exert direct influence over their local environment. To date, over seven editions of the program have resulted in the implementation of nearly 700 tasks with a total value exceeding 19.2 million PLN.
