Italy's electoral law dispute intensifies as Conte attacks Meloni

Giuseppe Conte, leader of the Movimento 5 Stelle, accused Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of a “furbata” over the draft electoral law, saying she should resign. Conte condemned the government’s attempt to block parliament and criticised a rejected amendment that would have allowed voters to write the name of a candidate instead of using pre‑printed party lists. He described the amendment as a legal “obbrobrio” intended to protect the ruling coalition’s interests and warned that the opposition will continue to push for a vote that respects voters’ freedom.

Other politicians, such as Antonio Azzariti, also warned that the law contains multiple constitutional risks, from the allocation of seats to the role of party leaders. The debate has sparked protests by opposition parties demanding Meloni’s resignation and highlighting the broader political deadlock in Italy.
