Giuseppe Conte pushes new 'Alliance for the Constitution' name for Italy's centre‑left coalition

Former prime minister Giuseppe Conte, now leader of the Movimento 5 Stelle, has suggested renaming the broad centre‑left coalition from the tentative “Campo largo” to “Alleanza per la Costituzione e la democrazia” (Acd). The proposal is intended to anchor the alliance around the Italian Constitution as an ideological core ahead of upcoming elections against Giorgia Meloni’s centre‑right government.

The suggestion has sparked a debate among coalition partners. Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein welcomed the constitutional reference but expressed reservations about the long acronym. Green party spokesperson Angelo Bonelli offered an alternative label, “Alleanza per la pace e l’ambiente” (APA). Leaders from Progetto Civico and other centrist groups voiced mixed reactions, while Carlo Calenda of Azione mocked the move. The naming dispute reflects broader tensions over leadership, programme priorities and the coalition’s strategy as it seeks to unite diverse parties under a common banner.
