GKN Aerospace reaches $125M settlement over Garden Grove hazmat incident

The Orange County District Attorney’s Office has announced a proposed $125 million settlement with GKN Aerospace and GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems, Inc. following a major hazardous materials emergency in Garden Grove. The settlement, which awaits approval from an Orange County Superior Court judge, addresses the May 2026 incident where an overheating tank of methyl methacrylate (MMA) forced the evacuation of approximately 50,000 residents.

Under the terms of the agreement, up to $100 million will be allocated to the displaced residents. The settlement also includes $8,471,385 to reimburse first responders for emergency response costs and $15 million in civil penalties for consumer protection enforcement. Additionally, GKN will pay $1.4 million to fund seven years of independent safety monitoring to ensure regulatory compliance.

The crisis began on May 21, 2026, at the GKN facility on Western Avenue when a malfunctioning cooling system and failed valve caused a large storage tank to overheat. The situation prompted a state of emergency and widespread evacuations across Garden Grove, Anaheim, Cypress, Stanton, Westminster, and Buena Park due to fears of a catastrophic explosion. The threat subsided after a crack in the tank wall relieved the internal pressure.
