GKN Aerospace Garden Grove hazmat settlement

Overview

In May 2026, a hazardous materials incident occurred at a GKN Aerospace facility in Garden Grove when a malfunctioning cooling system and failed valve caused a 34,000-gallon storage tank of methyl methacrylate (MMA) to overheat. The threat of a catastrophic explosion prompted a state of emergency and the evacuation of approximately 50,000 residents and businesses across Garden Grove, Anaheim, Cypress, Stanton, Westminster, and Buena Park.

Following the incident, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office proposed a $125 million settlement with GKN Aerospace and GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems, Inc. The settlement terms include up to $100 million for a claims program to assist evacuees with expenses, $15 million in civil penalties for consumer protection enforcement, and reimbursement for first responders and local agencies. Additionally, GKN is required to pay $1.4 million to fund seven years of independent safety monitoring. An Orange County Superior Court judge has since approved the agreement.
