GKN Aerospace settles for $125M over Garden Grove hazmat incident
An Orange County Superior Court judge has approved a $125 million settlement with GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems, Inc. and GKN Aerospace, Inc. following a hazardous materials incident in Garden Grove.
The settlement stems from a May 2026 chemical leak involving a 34,000-gallon storage tank that threatened to explode, forcing the evacuation of approximately 50,000 residents and businesses across Garden Grove, Stanton, and surrounding communities during Memorial Day weekend.
Key components of the agreement include: - A claims program of up to $100 million for evacuees to cover expenses such as hotel stays. - $15 million in civil penalties to be used for consumer protection enforcement. - Reimbursement for first responders and local agencies for resources used during the emergency. - Seven years of oversight and monitoring by the District Attorney and the Court to ensure compliance with safety plans and regulatory requirements, with the company paying $1.4 million for this monitoring.
District Attorney Todd Spitzer noted that the agreement helps recoup taxpayer funds spent by the Orange County Fire Authority and various local municipalities during the response.
