Glacier burst in Tibet triggers massive floods in Nepal and Bihar
A massive flood in Nepal, occurring without significant rainfall or cloudbursts, is being attributed to a glacier burst in Tibet. Geologists suggest that a glacier collapse may have caused a 4.4 magnitude tremor, which was recorded by the USGS. While initial theories suggested an earthquake caused the burst, scientists now believe the movement of the ice itself may have triggered the seismic activity.
The surge of water, estimated at approximately 3 million cusecs, is flowing through Nepal’s Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers toward India. This has placed the Indian state of Bihar on high alert, particularly in the Gandak and Kosi river regions. Authorities are closely monitoring districts including West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Saran, Vaishali, and Muzaffarpur.
In response, the Valmikinagar Gandak Barrage has opened all 36 gates to manage the influx, discharging over 102,100 cusecs of water. Concerns remain regarding heavy debris accompanying the floodwaters, which could increase pressure on embankments and river structures. The Water Resources Department has ordered 24-hour surveillance of critical embankments, including the Saran embankment.
