Glasgow Airport launches solar farm to meet 25% of electricity demand

Glasgow Airport has commenced operations at a new 10MW solar farm, which is expected to supply approximately 25% of the airport’s on-site electricity demand. Located near Barnsford Road, the facility features more than 14,300 photovoltaic panels and is projected to save roughly 1,100 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent annually.

The project is a central component of AGS Airports’ new sustainability and ESG strategy, titled ‘Horizons – Looking ahead, acting together’. This strategy outlines the group’s commitment to achieving net zero emissions for its own operations by 2035. Following the success at Glasgow, the airport operator has proposed implementing similar infrastructure at Aberdeen International and Southampton airports.

The development was a collaborative effort involving AGS Airports, energy transition adviser Ikigai Group, and Zestec Renewable Energy, which will manage and optimize the infrastructure. The project was also supported by SP Energy Networks, the electricity network operator for central and southern Scotland.
