UK airport solar energy infrastructure expansion
Overview
Major airports in the United Kingdom have begun implementing on-site solar farm projects to support decarbonization goals.
London Stansted Airport launched a solar farm featuring over 24,000 panels, capable of producing up to 17.2 megawatts of direct current power. The facility is intended to support the airport’s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions from direct operations by 2038.
Following this, Glasgow Airport commenced operations at a 10MW solar farm designed to supply approximately 25% of the airport’s on-site electricity demand. This project is part of the AGS Airports ‘Horizons – Looking ahead, acting together’ strategy, which aims for net zero emissions by 2035. The operator has proposed expanding similar infrastructure to Aberdeen International and Southampton airports.
