Gülbahar Hatun Mosque reopens after 541-year-old structure restoration
The 541-year-old Gülbahar Hatun Mosque in Tokat, Turkey, has reopened for worship following extensive restoration work conducted by the General Directorate of Foundations. Originally commissioned in 1485 by Sultan Bayezid II in honor of his mother, Gülbahar Hatun, the historical site underwent significant structural improvements.
During the technical assessment, the mosque's minaret was found to be structurally risky and vulnerable to earthquakes. As a result, the minaret was completely dismantled in a controlled manner in 2023 and subsequently rebuilt. The interior of the mosque was also restored to its original state.
In addition to the mosque, the imaret section of the complex has been reopened as a soup kitchen, adhering to the original foundation endowment. An opening ceremony was held attended by Tokat Governor Abdullah Köklü, General Directorate of Foundations Director Sinan Aksu, and local officials to mark the return of the landmark to its congregation.
