Restoration of historical mosques in Turkey

Overview

Historical religious sites in Turkey are being reopened following extensive restoration projects led by the General Directorate of Foundations.

In Gaziantep, the 16th-century Tahtani Mosque has reopened for worship after undergoing structural reinforcement, minaret reconstruction, and electrical upgrades to repair damage caused by the February 2023 earthquakes.

Similarly, in Tokat, the 541-year-old Gülbahar Hatun Mosque has reopened. The restoration included the controlled dismantling and rebuilding of a minaret that was deemed “structurally risky and vulnerable to earthquakes.” The project also restored the interior to its original state and reopened the complex’s imaret section as a soup kitchen.
