Glencore and Yancoal seek approval for Hunter Valley coal mine

Glencore and the Chinese state-owned enterprise Yancoal are seeking approval for a major coal mining expansion through their joint venture, Hunter Valley Operations (HVO). If approved, the project is intended to ship 429 million tonnes of coal over the next 20 years in the Hunter region of New South Wales.

The decision rests with three officers from the Independent Planning Commission NSW: Simon Smith, Janett Milligan, and Michael Chilcott. The commission faces a complex challenge in balancing environmental concerns regarding fossil fuel use against the economic necessity of securing jobs and stability for the Hunter economy.

The situation is complicated by political pressure, including recent public calls for approval from NSW Premier Chris Minns and Natural Resources Minister Courtney Houssos. Additionally, the transition away from coal in the region remains difficult, highlighted by the recent closure announcement of the Ashton mine due to geological issues and legislative technicalities affecting the federal Net Zero Economy Authority's ability to provide workforce transition plans.
