Gliwice Canal fish die-off caused by toxic gold algae
Polish authorities have recovered more than four tons of dead fish from the Gliwice Canal, a tributary of the Oder river in Upper Silesia. The mass die-off is attributed to a bloom of the toxic gold algae, Prymnesium parvum.
To prevent the algae from spreading to other sections of the canal, officials have suspended the operation of two locks and are conducting regular patrols by land and water. If the spread continues, authorities are considering the controlled introduction of hydrogen peroxide to destroy the algae cells.
The current environmental conditions, including low water levels and high salinity, are conducive to algae blooms. The Oder river at Frankfurt has recently reached a record low of 77 centimeters. This situation mirrors the 2022 environmental catastrophe in the Oder, which experts also linked to toxic gold algae blooms.
