Gliwice Canal toxic algae fish kill
Overview
A significant fish kill has occurred in the Gliwice Canal in Poland, attributed to toxic ‘golden algae’ (Prymnesium parvum).
Initial reports on August 16 noted the removal of approximately 157 kilograms of dead fish, including carp, bream, and perch, from section VI of the canal. In response, authorities restricted water flow downstream in sections V and VI and suspended lock operations at Łabędy and Dzierżno to mitigate the spread of the bloom.
By August 18, the scale of the mortality increased, with over 1.2 tons of dead fish recovered since August 15. The die-off has affected species such as pike-perch, bream, carp, and crucian carp. To protect the Dzierżno Duże reservoir, officials halted water flow from sections V and VI and banned navigation in section V to prevent wave-induced movement of the algae.
Furthermore, the Silesian Voivode, Marek Wójcik, prohibited the use of section VI, including bans on swimming, fishing, drinking the water, and consuming fish. Recent testing indicated algae concentrations in the Oder River reached approximately 550 million cells per liter, marking the third-highest level of bloom threat recorded.
