Gliwice Canal fish kill linked to toxic golden algae
Authorities in Gliwice are conducting intensive monitoring and control operations along the Gliwice Canal following a significant fish kill. On Sunday, August 16, workers removed approximately 157 kilograms of dead fish, including carp, bream, and perch, from section VI of the canal. This follows smaller removals of 12 kilograms and 22 kilograms on August 15.
The mass mortality is linked to the presence of 'golden algae' (Prymnesium parvum), a toxic phytoplankton bloom. To mitigate the risk of the bloom spreading, authorities have implemented recommendations from the Interministerial Team for the Odra River. These measures include completely restricting water flow downstream in sections V and VI of the canal and suspending lock operations at Łabędy and Dzierżno until further notice.
Patrols are being carried out by land and water, focusing on sections IV, V, and VI, as well as the Dzierżno Duże reservoir. While no fish deaths have been reported in the Opole Voivodeship sections of the canal so far, services remain on alert and are coordinating with environmental protection, veterinary, and emergency management agencies.
