Gliwice modernises pedestrian signals for blind and visually impaired

The city of Gliwice is extending its Intelligent Transport System (ITS) project, scheduled to continue until March 2027, with a focus on making pedestrian crossings accessible for people with visual impairments and seniors. New tactile buttons can be activated by proximity, pressing from underneath, or automatically via image‑analysis detection. Each button provides a raised arrow, vibration feedback and an auditory confirmation. Installed acoustic signals guide users to the button, confirm the request, and indicate when it is safe to cross.

Representatives of the City Road Board demonstrated the equipment at the Anders‑Mieszka I and Sowiński‑Kulesza intersections and consulted members of the local Polish Association of the Blind, who stressed the need for uniform devices across the city. The board pledged to equip all upgraded crossings with identical solutions.
