Poland transport upgrades – Late July 2026
Overview
Poland’s transport and municipal‑infrastructure programme continued to expand in late July 2026. Ongoing works on the S1 expressway tunnel (Laliki‑Rajcza) remained fully closed through early August, with heavy‑vehicle traffic diverted via the S52 route; a landslide near Lake Żywiec also forced the closure of county road 1406 S, with detours lasting until November. Municipal road upgrades proceeded in Łódź, Radomsk, Bydgoszcz (tram‑stop remodel with added bus services) and numerous towns that imposed weight limits or rerouted local lines.
In the Pomeranian region, twelve EU‑funded projects totalling nearly 26 million zł were approved for migrant integration, language training and urban revitalisation in Gdańsk, Gdynia, Ustka and Redzikowo. Gdańsk’s public transport announced emergency rerouting of bus lines 176 and 213, while Bydgoszcz prepared a month‑long reconstruction of the Nakielska/Słoneczna tram stop.
A major rail initiative, the Magistrala Warmińska high‑speed corridor, was unveiled, linking Warsaw with the Tricity via Olsztyn and Elbląg and promising 250 km/h speeds that would cut Warsaw‑Olsztyn travel to 75 minutes and halve other regional journeys. The Integrated Rail Network plan foresees 4,700 km of new lines and extensive modernisation of existing tracks.
Kraków introduced a distance‑based fare for trams and buses, and Radomsko closed a key bus crossing for reconstruction. PKP Szybka Kolej Miejska will replace Polregio as the main regional electric operator in the Pomeranian area from December. PKP Intercity reported a record 44.7 million passengers in H1 2026 and detailed a 64‑km modernisation of line 12, including a new Rawka River bridge, with broader corridor upgrades scheduled for completion by 2029.
