Gaj Oławski to site of major green hydrogen and gravity energy storage project
A major energy project is underway in Gaj Oławski, near Wrocław, involving a massive investment of approximately 447 million PLN. The development, led by ELQ in contract with Promet-Plast, aims to transform the local energy market through two advanced technological installations.
Central to the project is a gravity-based energy storage system consisting of two 212-meter-high towers. These structures will house 1,415 concrete blocks, each weighing 60 tons. The system functions by using surplus renewable energy to lift the blocks; during periods of high demand, the blocks are lowered to drive turbines and generate electricity, providing a storage capacity of approximately 70 MWh.
Additionally, the site will feature five electrolyzers dedicated to producing renewable hydrogen (RFNBO). This facility is expected to produce 1,700 tons of green hydrogen annually, supporting the decarbonization of the transport and industrial sectors while meeting strict European Union standards. The project is scheduled for completion in 2027.
