Global aesthetic procedures reach 38 million in 2024

Global demand for aesthetic procedures reached nearly 38 million in 2024, according to data from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. This total includes approximately 17.4 million surgical procedures and 20.5 million nonsurgical treatments, representing a 42.5% increase in volume over a four-year period.

The United States recorded the highest overall number of procedures with over 6.1 million, followed by Brazil with 3.1 million and Japan with 1.6 million. While the U.S. leads in total volume, Brazil led the world in surgical procedures specifically, accounting for roughly 2.3 million operations.

Eyelid surgery emerged as the most common surgical cosmetic procedure, surpassing liposuction with more than 2.1 million instances. Other frequent surgical treatments included breast augmentation, scar revision, and rhinoplasty. Nonsurgical treatments continue to represent more than half of all procedures, led by Botulinum toxin (7.8 million) and hyaluronic acid injections (6.3 million).

Plastic surgery is categorized into reconstructive procedures, which address functional impairments from trauma, disease, or congenital abnormalities, and cosmetic procedures, which focus on aesthetic enhancement.
