Global bond markets face volatility amid rising sovereign debt concerns

Global bond markets are experiencing significant volatility as sovereign debt concerns rise across major economies. In the United States, 30-year bond yields have reached levels not seen in three decades, with total US debt exceeding $40 trillion. European markets are also under pressure, with French bond yields reaching their worst levels since 2008 and German yields seeing significant shifts since 2011.

In Japan, the yen has faced severe depreciation due to the interest rate gap between the US and Japan, alongside concerns regarding Japan's public debt, which exceeds 200% of its GDP. Reports indicate that the US Treasury has taken the highly unusual step of intervening to support the Bank of Japan by purchasing yen against the euro to stabilize the currency without impacting the dollar. This move has reportedly caused friction with the European Central Bank, which was informed of the intervention only after it occurred, leading to accusations of a violation of established monetary cooperation conventions.

Economic uncertainty is being driven by several factors, including high inflation, rising oil prices, uncertain growth in China, and political instability related to US midterm elections.
