Global commodity trends impact coffee and chocolate prices
Rising production costs and supply chain dynamics are affecting the prices and quality of popular consumer goods like coffee and chocolate.
In the coffee market, experts warn that despite a stabilization in recent price surges, consumers should not expect lower prices in stores. Michał Bryda-Przybyszewski of the Fairtrade Poland Foundation notes that global coffee stocks remain too low to allow for market relief. While favorable weather in Brazil, Vietnam, and Indonesia has improved harvests, global consumption continues to outpace production. In the 2024/2025 season, supply fell short of demand by approximately 6.3 million bags.
Similarly, cocoa prices have significantly impacted chocolate manufacturers, leading some to seek cost-cutting measures. To identify high-quality milk chocolate, consumers are advised to check ingredient lists for specific indicators. Premium chocolate should primarily contain cocoa ingredients, sugar, and milk, with cocoa butter listed before cocoa mass to ensure a smoother texture. High-quality products avoid the addition of vegetable fats like palm or shea oil, which are permitted by regulations only up to a 5% limit.
