Global corn markets face price divergence between U.S. and Europe
Global corn markets are experiencing significant price divergence between the United States and Europe. In the U.S., CME Group corn contracts have faced downward pressure due to massive speculative selling following unfavorable USDA reports. Conversely, European prices on Euronext are responding to agricultural supply fundamentals.
The European Commission estimates that corn production in the EU-27 will drop to 48.3 million tons in 2026, down from 57.1 million tons the previous year. This shortfall may require the bloc to import at least 25 million tons. Logistics issues in the Black Sea and resistance from farmers in Poland, Hungary, and Romania to Ukrainian grain imports via land routes are further complicating European supply.
In Argentina, corn prices in Rosario have reached $287,500 per ton. Despite an 8.5% export tax, local FAS Rosario values are exceeding Chicago prices due to intense international demand for Argentine corn. While recent rains have benefited crops, logistical and infrastructure challenges continue to impact local delivery and pricing dynamics.
