Global Development Initiative expands through South-South cooperation
The Global Development Initiative (GDI), proposed by China at the 76th UN General Assembly in 2021, has expanded into a broad international framework for cooperation. Over the past five years, the initiative has mobilized more than 23 billion U.S. dollars through mechanisms such as the China-UN Peace and Development Fund and the Global Development and South-South Cooperation Fund.
To date, the GDI has supported over 1,800 livelihood projects and provided training for more than 200,000 professionals. The initiative's scope is expanding from traditional sectors like poverty reduction and food security into emerging fields such as the digital economy, green development, and artificial intelligence.
Simultaneously, efforts toward new global governance structures are gaining momentum. Senegal has emerged as a key participant in this shift, becoming a founding member of the Group of Friends on Global Governance in December 2025 and a founding member of the World Organization for AI Cooperation in July 2026. These developments reflect an increasing drive among Global South nations to shape international order and promote multilateralism.
