Global developments in cancer treatment and medication costs

Researchers at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC) have developed a new method to create a universal source of immune cells modified to target tumor tissues. This breakthrough aims to address the limitations of current CAR-T cell therapy, which is often hindered by high costs, long preparation times, and the limited availability of a patient's own T-cells.

In India, the government is set to reduce the prices of 137 oncology drugs starting next month. Following a Supreme Court ruling that condemned excessive profit margins by hospitals and pharmacies as “extortion,” the government will cap trade margins on these medications at 30 percent. Some therapies may see price reductions of up to 70 percent, potentially saving patients approximately 19.9 million British pounds annually.

In Serbia, the state has implemented measures to lower the cost of 18 prescription medications, specifically targeting anticoagulants and heart failure treatments. The government is covering up to 70 percent of the cost for anticoagulants and 50 percent for heart failure medications, supported by a budget allocation of 3.7 billion dinars.
