Global dollar-pegged stablecoin market reaches US$ 300 billion
The global market for dollar-pegged stablecoins has reached approximately US$ 300 billion, according to data from BitGo. The market is heavily concentrated, with Tether (USDT) and Circle (USDC) accounting for more than 85% of the total global volume. Tether currently leads the sector with a market capitalization of approximately US$ 183.2 billion, representing a 60.93% market share, followed by USDC with US$ 73.6 billion.
In contrast, the market for Brazilian real-pegged stablecoins remains a niche sector. The top ten active stablecoins tied to the real total only R$ 720.6 million, which is more than 2,000 times smaller than the dollar-pegged market. Analysts suggest this disparity exists because demand in Brazil is primarily driven by a desire for dollar exposure rather than tokenized local currency. The largest active real tokenization project is BRLA, operated by Avenia, with a market capitalization of roughly R$ 163 million.
Regulatory developments are also shaping the landscape. In the European Union, the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has issued statements regarding stablecoins that do not comply with MiCA regulations, setting deadlines for the liquidation of certain positions by early 2027. Meanwhile, in Brazil, Bill 4.308/2024 seeks to limit the trading of foreign stablecoins to providers authorized by the Central Bank.
