Global stablecoin market growth and regulation

Overview

The global stablecoin market has seen significant growth, reaching a valuation between $300 billion and $322 billion. This market capitalization now exceeds the foreign exchange reserves of 95 nations, including Canada, Mexico, and the United Kingdom. The market remains highly concentrated, with Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USDC controlling approximately 88.5% of the total share, and nearly 99% of stablecoins being denominated in U.S. dollars. While stablecoin transfers exceeded $30 trillion in 2025, analysts have identified a gap between total transaction volume and organic payment activity. Organic payments supported by stablecoins reached approximately $400 billion last year, up from less than $30 billion in 2020. Regulatory approaches vary by jurisdiction. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has noted differences between frameworks in the European Union, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States regarding reserve custody, redemption speeds, and whether issuers can self-custody reserves. While most regions prohibit issuers from paying interest to prevent stablecoins from functioning as investment products, the BIS highlighted potential loopholes where restrictions apply to specific entities rather than entire corporate groups. As of September 2026, the total market capitalization has reached approximately $309 billion, representing a nearly 50% increase from the $206 billion recorded at the end of 2024. The market is currently within $13 billion of its all-time high of $322 billion set in May 2026. Tether remains the dominant issuer, with USDT commanding roughly 60% of the market share (approximately $183 billion to $184 billion). Circle’s USDC holds the second-largest position with a 24% to 25% market share, valued between $74 billion and $77 billion. While Tether leads in total supply, USDC has shown recent momentum, adding roughly $584 million to its market cap in a single week.
