Middle East conflict disrupts global energy and food markets

Six months after US and Israeli military actions against Iran, the resulting regional conflict continues to disrupt global energy and food supplies. A significant bottleneck has formed in the Strait of Hormuz, where daily vessel traffic has plummeted from over 100 ships to as few as six to eleven. This maritime disruption has contributed to volatility in oil markets, with Brent crude averaging near 90 dollars per barrel in 2026, up from approximately 70 dollars the previous year.

The crisis has extended to refined fuels and agriculture. Diesel prices have risen sharply due to reduced Gulf exports and refinery disruptions. In Europe, natural gas prices have more than doubled, exceeding 66 euros per megawatt-hour. These energy costs, combined with fertilizer shortages, have placed immense pressure on the agricultural sector. In the US Midwest, grain producers report facing their most severe financial crisis since the 1980s, with the American Farm Bureau Federation projecting a combined deficit of 63 billion dollars between 2024 and 2027 if government assistance is not provided.

Despite these geopolitical and economic tensions, global stock markets have reached historic highs. The MSCI World Index hit a record 105 trillion dollars, bolstered by significant corporate investment in artificial intelligence.
