Global EV infrastructure shows significant regional disparities

A comparison of electric vehicle (EV) fleets and public charging infrastructure across 46 countries reveals significant global disparities. Based on IEA Global EV Outlook 2026 data, some nations face severe infrastructure shortages as vehicle adoption outpaces charger installation.

In Uruguay, the EV fleet grew from 11,250 to 25,900 between 2024 and 2025, while public charging points only increased from 140 to 160, resulting in 162 vehicles per single charger. The Philippines saw a similar trend, with the ratio rising from 18 to 128 vehicles per charger. The United Arab Emirates reported the highest ratio at 153 vehicles per charger.

Conversely, South Korea has proactively expanded its network, maintaining a ratio of approximately two EVs per public charger due to mandates requiring charging options in new and existing residential buildings. China has also successfully scaled its infrastructure, adding 1.38 million new charging points in a single year to support a fleet of 44.4 million electric vehicles. In Europe, the Netherlands leads with roughly six EVs per public charger, followed by Greece, Belgium, Austria, and France.
