Global electric vehicle infrastructure development

Overview

China has significantly expanded its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, reaching over 23 million connectors by late July 2026. This growth, a 41.9% year-on-year increase, is largely driven by private installations, which account for approximately 18.5 million units. While public charging facility growth has slowed to 21.3%, China remains a dominant force in the global EV market. On a global scale, data from the IEA Global EV Outlook 2026 highlights significant regional disparities in the ratio of vehicles to chargers. While China has successfully scaled its network to support 44.4 million electric vehicles, other nations face severe shortages. For example, the United Arab Emirates reported the highest ratio at 153 vehicles per charger, while Uruguay and the Philippines also saw vehicle adoption outpace infrastructure installation. In contrast, South Korea and several European nations, such as the Netherlands, have maintained much lower vehicle-to-charger ratios through proactive expansion and mandates. Further analysis of the IEA report indicates that the total number of stations is less critical than the available charging power relative to the number of EVs. In terms of public charging capacity per vehicle, South Korea leads with 9.2 kW, followed by India at 6.2 kW and China at 5.9 kW. In contrast, Uruguay and the United Arab Emirates report significantly lower availability, at 0.092 kW and 0.096 kW per vehicle, respectively. Recent assessments of electric mobility readiness provide additional context for these disparities. According to Arthur D. Little’s Global Electric Mobility Readiness Index (GEMRIX) 2026, the United Arab Emirates ranks 22nd globally and first among GCC countries. The UAE’s infrastructure has expanded to approximately 2,800 points, including 1,250 direct-current chargers and 350 high-power units.
