Global Food System Confronts Regulation Gaps and Rising Prices

The absence of a legal definition for ultraprocessed foods is hindering regulatory action worldwide. Researchers note that up to 40% of cardiovascular deaths may be linked to these foods, while lawsuits target major producers such as Kraft Heinz, PepsiCo, Coca‑Cola and Nestlé. International bodies including the World Health Organization and the US Food and Drug Administration are still working on a standard definition, complicating policy development.

At the same time, agricultural commodity prices have surged to three‑year highs. Heat waves, ongoing tensions in the Black Sea, and disruptions to fertilizer supplies caused by the conflict in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz are driving up input costs. The war in Ukraine further reduces grain exports, prompting UN forecasts that millions could face heightened hunger risk. Together, regulatory uncertainty and price pressures threaten global food security and public health.
