Global fuel price protests erupt amid U.S.-Iran war

Global protests have erupted as skyrocketing fuel prices and frequent power outages drive widespread public anger. The unrest is linked to the ongoing months-long war between the United States and Iran, which has significantly increased global energy costs. Oil prices recently surpassed $100 per barrel following U.S. strikes on Iranian tankers in the Gulf and renewed conflict in Yemen affecting the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

In Syria, the surge in fuel costs has triggered the largest demonstrations since the fall of the Assad regime, with diesel prices rising approximately 40% and gasoline increasing by over 25%. Other regions have seen significant unrest, including road blockades in Guatemala and marches by workers and business leaders in Portugal.

Governments are attempting to mitigate the economic fallout. In Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved a nationwide energy conservation plan that includes a 50% reduction in fuel use for government vehicles for three months, though essential services like ambulances and law enforcement remain exempt. In the United States, analysts warn of a potential 30% jump in heating oil prices during the winter months.
