Global holidays and observances in October

October features several significant international observances and national holidays. In China, the anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic is marked on October 1, often resulting in a ‘Golden Week’ of holidays designed to boost domestic tourism and allow for family travel.

Other notable international dates include World Vegetarian Day and International Coffee Day on October 1. October 2 marks the International Day of Non-Violence, established by the UN General Assembly to honor the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi. Additionally, Wildlife Week is observed from October 2 to October 8 to promote fauna preservation.

In the United States, Columbus Day is a primary October holiday, though it has faced increasing scrutiny regarding its historical implications for indigenous peoples.
