International holidays and observances in October
Overview
October features several significant international observances and national holidays. In China, the anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic is marked on October 1, which often results in a ‘Golden Week’ intended to boost domestic tourism and facilitate family travel.
Other notable dates include World Vegetarian Day and International Coffee Day on October 1, and the International Day of Non-Violence on October 2, established by the UN General Assembly to honor Mahatma Gandhi. Additionally, Wildlife Week is observed from October 2 to October 8 to promote fauna preservation. In the United States, Columbus Day is a primary holiday, though it has faced increasing scrutiny regarding its historical implications for indigenous peoples.
