Global industrial decarbonisation efforts face investment and implementation hurdles
Ireland is advancing its industrial decarbonisation programme, transitioning from policy goals to active investment. A progress report shows €163 million has been allocated to 43 projects over the last two years. Supported by Enterprise Ireland, IDA Ireland, and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, up to €500 million is available through 2030 for projects focused on renewable generation, energy efficiency, and cleaner technologies. The Environmental Aid Fund, valued at approximately €300 million, is a central component of this effort. Current commitments are expected to reduce emissions by more than 346,377 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
In Australia, the focus of industrial decarbonisation has shifted from setting targets to addressing implementation challenges. While major organisations have established net zero goals and frameworks like the Safeguard Mechanism provide accountability, the transition faces hurdles in deployment. Industry experts suggest the primary barrier is no longer technology, but rather an “investability challenge.” High capital costs, increased construction expenses, and supply chain uncertainties are complicating the commercial cases required to secure investment for net zero projects.
