Ireland and Northern Ireland industrial sustainability funds
Overview
Ireland and Northern Ireland have launched the €26 million Shared Island Sustainability Challenge Fund to support industrial decarbonisation. The fund is split equally, with €13 million allocated to each jurisdiction, and is delivered through a partnership between Enterprise Ireland, Invest Northern Ireland, and InterTradeIreland.
The initiative targets collaborative projects in priority areas including flexible industrial electrification, hard-to-abate climate technologies, water efficiency, and circularity. In addition to the shared fund, Northern Ireland has introduced the Net Zero Accelerator to identify projects focused on renewable energy integration, energy storage, and industrial decarbonisation.
Ireland is now transitioning from policy goals to active investment. A progress report indicates that €163 million has been allocated to 43 projects over the last two years. Supported by Enterprise Ireland, IDA Ireland, and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, up to €500 million is available through 2030 for projects focused on renewable generation, energy efficiency, and cleaner technologies. A central component of this effort is the Environmental Aid Fund, valued at approximately €300 million. Current commitments are expected to reduce emissions by more than 346,377 tonnes of CO2 equivalent.
