Global initiatives commemorate war victims for International Day of Non-Violence

To mark the International Day of Non-Violence, various global and local initiatives are being launched to commemorate victims of armed conflict.

German media artist Philip Gröning has introduced a global sound installation titled ‘Sounds of Loss’. The 49-hour acoustic intervention features a sound played approximately every 2.6 minutes to symbolize lives lost in war. The project is being hosted in significant cultural and religious sites worldwide, including St. Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne, the National Museum of Singapore, Berlin Cathedral, and St. John the Divine in New York. The installation also has the support of the Vatican and will be featured in St. Peter’s Basilica.

In Palermo, Italy, a network of eight schools is organizing a procession to raise awareness about the impact of war. The demonstration will feature a 70-meter shroud inscribed with the names of over 18,000 children killed in Gaza. The organizers stated that the initiative aims to move beyond the classroom to engage citizens in an act of memory and a call for peace.
