Global commemorations and Italian responses to conflict
Overview
Global and local initiatives continue to emerge to commemorate victims of armed conflict. Artistic projects, such as Philip Gröning’s ‘Sounds of Loss’ sound installation, have been hosted in major religious and cultural sites like St. Peter’s Basilica to symbolize lives lost in war.
In Italy, commemorations have focused on both historical and contemporary conflicts. In Marzabotto, events marked the 82nd anniversary of the 1944 Monte Sole massacres, where speakers called for an end to modern atrocities in Gaza and Ukraine. In Comiso, the ‘Comiso cantiere per la Pace’ committee has organized the ‘Cammino per la Pace’ (Walk for Peace) for October 10–11, 2026. This event marks the 45th anniversary of the 1981 protests against Cruise missile installations at the former Vincenzo Magliocco airport. A central feature is the ‘Sudario della memoria’ (Shroud of Memory), a 70-meter white cloth created by students from the ‘Giorgio La Pira’ Institute displaying the names of over 18,500 children killed in Gaza since 2023. Following controversy regarding the publication of information about this demonstration, alumni of the ‘Edoardo Amaldi’ high school issued a statement supporting the school’s mission to teach students to ‘observe, ask questions, and seek answers.’
On the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks, Italian leaders addressed the dual crises of the initial massacre and the humanitarian situation in Gaza. President Sergio Mattarella condemned the acts of terrorism as being committed with ‘extreme and inhuman cruelty,’ while noting that Israeli operations in Gaza have caused ‘human and material devastation of intolerable gravity.’ Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized the fight against antisemitism while stating Italy cannot remain indifferent to the ‘dramatic and unacceptable suffering’ of Gaza's inhabitants. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto also noted that the suffering of one people should not make others indifferent to the suffering of another.
