Global leaders call for urgent action to combat food insecurity

During a ministerial meeting held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, leaders from the United States, the European Union, the African Union, Colombia, Nigeria, and Indonesia issued a joint declaration to address rising global food insecurity. The group committed to increasing financial aid to humanitarian organizations and pledged not to implement restrictions on food and fertilizer markets.

The crisis is being exacerbated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and fertilizer shortages. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that food access should not be a privilege, while Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez noted that fighting hunger is impossible without peace.

In related developments, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France will fund the evacuation of Ukrainian wheat to Somalia to assist with famine threats. U.S. President Joe Biden is also expected to announce new American aid following the meeting.
