Global mangrove forests recover as restoration and blue‑carbon markets boost coverage
Satellite monitoring by the Global Mangrove Watch shows that mangrove areas have stabilized and begun to expand in 2025, driven by the growth of blue‑carbon credit markets that finance protection and replanting projects in regions such as Indonesia and Brazil. The credit system monetises the carbon stored in mangrove ecosystems, encouraging companies to fund large‑scale restoration and active management.
A new four‑decade study from Tulane University confirms a net global increase in mangrove coverage, with gains now outpacing losses across the U.S. Gulf Coast, China, Australia and other coastal zones. Researchers attribute the rebound to a mix of natural regrowth, restored river deltas and abandoned aquaculture sites, and to targeted restoration efforts supported by satellite‑based mapping. While the overall trend is positive, scientists warn that the recovery remains fragile and depends on continued deforestation controls, sediment flow protection and resilience to climate shocks such as extreme freezes.
The combined findings highlight mangroves as a critical nature‑based solution for carbon storage and coastal protection, underscoring the importance of sustained investment and monitoring to maintain and expand these ecosystems worldwide.
