Mangrove restoration and conservation

Overview

Indonesia’s mangrove restoration drive accelerated through July 2026. World Mangrove Day on 26 July saw coordinated planting across the archipelago, with banks, ministries, universities and local governments adding tens of thousands of seedlings. Bank Negara Indonesia reported a cumulative 258,000 seedlings over eight years, while Permodalan Nasional Madani pledged 196,700 trees across 58 sites by year-end. Bank Rakyat Indonesia’s “BRI Peduli” placed 24,000 seedlings in Karawang and the DKI Jakarta administration sowed 24,310 seedlings at five coastal sites, joined by police and military personnel. University Telogorejo contributed 1,000 mangrove and fish seedlings, and InJourney added 20,000, including 4,500 in the Mandalika tourism zone. In Bali, Governor Wayan Koster announced a monthly planting schedule involving schools, entrepreneurs and community groups to protect the island’s 3,000 ha of existing mangroves. At the Batu Lumbang eco‑tourism site, FINNS Bali and the Bali Youth Parliament for Water planted 1,200 Rhizophora mucronata seedlings. The 10th East Java Mangrove Festival on 29 July 2026 highlighted mangroves as carbon sinks and flood barriers. Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa stressed a “penta‑helix” collaboration, and Deputy Regent Dirham Akbar Aksara received an award for preserving 135.6 ha in Lamongan. Astra Motor Bengkulu pledged 1,000 seedlings for World Mangrove Day under its AM Greeners CSR programme. The Ministry of Forestry launched the Mangroves for Coastal Resilience (M4CR) programme, targeting rehabilitation of 32,634 ha—the world’s largest mangrove project—starting with 1,000 trees in Aceh and expanding to East and North Kalimantan, North Sumatra and Riau, with a 2027 completion goal. Ministries reiterated the 2026 target to restore more than 17,000 ha, building on the 91,678 ha restored by the end of 2025. In early August 2026, TelkomGroup planted 20,000 seedlings in Central Java and East Nusa Tenggara as part of its “GoZero%” sustainability programme.
