Global mosquito control efforts expand amid rising disease risks
Scientists are developing new strategies to combat the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the primary vector for dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. As mosquitoes develop resistance to traditional insecticides, researchers are exploring biological methods, genetic modification, and new vaccines.
One prominent method involves the use of Wolbachia bacteria. In trials conducted in Indonesia, areas where mosquitoes infected with specific Wolbachia strains were released saw an 86% reduction in dengue-related hospitalizations compared to areas without the method.
Simultaneously, climate change and increased international mobility are facilitating the expansion of tropical species like the tiger mosquito. In Spain, the presence of the tiger mosquito is now a consolidated reality across the Mediterranean coast, the Balearic Islands, and parts of the northern plateau. This expansion has contributed to local outbreaks of dengue and West Nile virus, making protection against bites a necessity even within European borders.
