Smartphone shipments fall 22% in Q3 2026 amid memory crisis

Global smartphone shipments experienced a significant downturn in the third quarter of 2026, falling 22% year-on-year to 255.3 million units according to IDC. This represents the steepest quarterly decline recorded to date. The primary driver of this slump is a global memory crisis, where the surge in demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for artificial intelligence infrastructure has diverted supply away from mobile devices. Consequently, DRAM and NAND memory costs have surged by approximately 350% over the past year.

Despite the overall market contraction, Samsung and Apple maintained their market leadership, capturing 22.6% and 22.4% market shares respectively. In contrast, Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo saw notable declines in shipments. In the Chinese market specifically, shipments fell 15.4%, though Huawei emerged as a standout performer, growing 18% year-on-year to reach a 21% market share.

Industry analysts warn that the market has not yet reached its bottom. Rising component costs are being passed on to consumers, with many manufacturers prioritizing profitability over volume. A significant market recovery is not anticipated until at least 2028.
