Global PC shipments fall 20% in Q3 2026 amid rising component costs

Global personal computer shipments experienced a sharp decline in the third quarter of 2026. According to IDC, shipments fell 20.1% year-over-year to 62.7 million units, marking a significant drop compared to the 3.8% decline seen in the second quarter. Omdia reported a similar contraction of 21.2%, with shipments totaling 58.1 million units.

Analysts attribute the downturn to several factors. First, many distributors and manufacturers stockpiled inventory during the first half of the year to hedge against rising component prices. This led to a saturation of supply and reduced demand in the third quarter. Second, the expansion of AI data centers has increased competition for semiconductor capacity, specifically driving up the costs of DRAM and SSDs. The cost share of these components in total PC pricing has risen from approximately 15% to nearly 40%.

In terms of manufacturer performance, Lenovo maintained its market leadership with 14.9 million units shipped and a 23.8% market share. HP saw the most significant decline among the top five, with shipments falling 30.9% to 10.3 million units. Dell also experienced a notable drop of 25%, shipping 7.6 million units. Conversely, Apple saw its shipments decline by 11.3% to 5.9 million units, but managed to increase its global market share from 8.5% to 9.5% due to the broader industry slump. ASUS reported the smallest decline among major vendors at 8.6%.
