Global shipping and energy costs surge amid Strait of Hormuz crisis

Global shipping and energy markets are facing significant volatility, driven by geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and rising fuel costs. Container shipping rates from the Far East to the United States have surged by over 320%, approaching pandemic-era highs. Specifically, rates to the US West Coast and East Coast have risen to approximately $7,960 and $11,259 per 40-foot container, respectively.

The oil tanker market is also experiencing extreme price hikes. Daily rental rates for Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) traveling from the Persian Gulf to Asia have reached a record $1.1 million. Other routes, such as West Africa to China and the Gulf of Mexico to Asia, have seen rental increases of nearly 500% and 400% over the past year.

In response to these energy shocks, the European Central Bank (ECB) has warned that inflation in the eurozone may remain higher and more persistent than previously expected. ECB Chief Economist Philip Lane noted that while price pass-through from energy to other sectors has been limited so far, a second wave of increases could drive up costs for food, electricity, and consumer goods. The ECB anticipates that inflation may not return to its 2% target until mid-2027.
