Global smartphone shipments drop 20% in Q3 2026

Global smartphone shipments fell by approximately 20% in the third quarter of 2026, marking the lowest third-quarter volume in over a decade. This decline is primarily attributed to a surge in memory chip prices—which reportedly increased by 350% in one year—and rising component costs driven by demand from AI infrastructure projects.

Market leaders Samsung and Apple have gained market share as they better absorb rising costs through premium segments. Samsung maintained its leadership with a market share between 23% and 26%, while Apple’s share rose to approximately 22%. In contrast, Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo experienced significant declines, with Xiaomi seeing shipments drop by over 30%.

In India, the market saw a 20% year-on-year slump, with shipments of devices priced below Rs 20,000 falling by 47%. Analysts suggest that rising prices are extending device replacement cycles as consumers hold onto older models longer or opt for refurbished devices. Projections indicate continued pressure on the market through 2026 and 2027 due to elevated component costs and shifting consumer demand toward premium segments.
