Global solar capacity nears 3 TW amid grid integration challenges
Global photovoltaic capacity reached approximately 2,974 GW by the end of 2025, according to the International Energy Agency PVPS. While the sector is approaching 3 TW of installed capacity, the growth rate is decelerating, dropping to 16% in 2025 compared to 28% in 2024.
As solar penetration increases—exceeding 10% of global electricity demand—grid integration has become a critical challenge. In mature markets like China and the European Union, issues such as negative prices, voltage restrictions, and production curtailment are becoming routine. Countries like Greece and Pakistan face specific challenges regarding grid stability and the loss of potential generation due to curtailment.
On a technological level, the automotive industry is exploring ways to utilize solar radiation directly on electric vehicle bodies. Prototypes like the Nissan Ariya Solar utilize high-efficiency silicon cells on the hood, roof, and tailgate to accumulate energy while parked. These systems aim to mitigate technical hurdles such as shading, vehicle curvature, and mechanical vibrations to maximize useful energy generation.
